Specimen Requirements:

Collect specimen using a culture swab transport medium (oral, ear, eye, wound, vagina, cervix, or urethra). Use sterile plastic container for respiratory secretions, body fluids, tissue, CSF, urine, hair, skin, nail, contact lens fluid and/or contact lens. Submit bone marrow in an Isolator Tube (order #6074). Keep refrigerated. If fungus is isolated, Fungal Isolate ID will be performed at an additional charge. If Coccidioides is suspected, a DNA probe will be performed at an additional charge. If fungal stain is also needed, please order either Fungus, Direct Examination, Test No. 4400 for hair, skin, and nails or Fungus Stain, Test No. 4100 for all other specimens. If susceptibilities are being considered or requested, please notify the microbiology lab.
