H. pylori is a very common infection. In fact, about 30-40% of people in the United States are infected by it. In most cases, you won’t experience any symptoms, but if you’re experiencing pain, aching, or burning in the abdomen, you may wish to get tested for H. pylori, as it can also lead to ulcers and other stomach problems. Once diagnosed, a treatment plan can be developed with your doctor to help treat the infection.

Learn More about H. Pylori

What is H. pylori?

Helicobacter pylori, commonly referred to as H. pylori, is a type of infection found in the stomach that can cause problems such as ulcers and can sometimes even lead to stomach cancer.

H. pylori is quite common. In fact, two thirds of the world’s population, and 30 to 40% of people in the United States, are infected with H. pylori. However, many people that are infected will not experience any symptoms.

Who is at risk for H. pylori?

Anyone can get H. pylori. However, people living in crowded conditions, without a reliable source of clean water, people that have lived in a developing country, and people that live with someone with the infection are at greater risk for H. pylori.

What are the symptoms of H. pylori?

In most cases, someone infected with H. pylori will not show any signs or symptoms. However, when symptoms are present, they may include:

  • Aching or burning in the abdomen

  • Abdominal pain when the stomach is empty

  • Unintended weight loss

  • Loss of appetite

  • Frequent burping

  • Nausea

  • Bloating

How can you prevent H. pylori?

At this time, the source of the H. pylori infection is still unknown, so there are no known measures to effectively prevent the infection. However, regularly washing your hands, eating properly prepared food, and drinking clean water are all recommended as potential steps for preventing infection.

Who should be tested for H. pylori?

If you are experiencing signs or symptoms of H. pylori, a doctor can help to evaluate your symptoms and provide guidance as to whether or not an H. pylori screening is right for you or if you should consider other testing.

How is H. pylori diagnosed?

Currently, there are two types of testing for diagnosing H. pylori. The two tests are a breath test, in which two breath samples are provided, and a stool test, in which a stool sample is provided, to check for the H. pylori infection.

My Lab ReQuest offers the H. pylori breath test for diagnosing H. pylori. This test is highly accurate and is FDA-cleared and recommended by both the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).

What is the treatment for H. pylori?

After an H. pylori diagnosis, a combination of antibiotics are to be used for a period lasting between 10-14 days to treat the infection. Your medical provider can assist you with selecting the appropriate treatment regimen and combination of antibiotics for your infection. For additional information on available treatment options, please contact your medical provider.
