What is H. pylori? 

Helicobacter pylori, commonly referred to as H. pylori, is a type of infection found in the stomach that can cause problems such as ulcers and can sometimes even lead to stomach cancer.

H. pylori is quite common. In fact, two thirds of the world’s population, and 30 to 40% of people in the United States, are infected with H. pylori. However, many people that are infected will not experience any symptoms.

Who is at risk for H. pylori?

Anyone can get H. pylori. However, people living in crowded conditions, without a reliable source of clean water, people that have lived in a developing country, and people that live with someone with the infection are at greater risk for H. pylori.

What are the symptoms of H. pylori?

In most cases, someone infected with H. pylori will not show any signs or symptoms. However, when symptoms are present, they may include:

How can you prevent H. pylori?

How is H. pylori diagnosed?

Currently, there are two types of testing for diagnosing H. pylori. The two tests are a breath test, in which two breath samples are provided, and a stool test, in which a stool sample is provided, to check for the H. pylori infection.
