Learn More about Pregnancy & Blood Testing for Pregnancy

What are the symptoms of a pregnancy?

While pregnancy symptoms may sometimes vary, the most common symptoms of a pregnancy are:

  • A missed period

  • Tender/sore breasts

  • Frequent urination

  • Fatigue

  • Morning sickness

Additional pregnancy symptoms include:

  • Spotting

  • Food cravings

  • Metallic taste in mouth

  • Headaches and dizziness

  • Cramping

If you are experiencing these symptoms, it’s important to get tested and to confirm your status as early as possible. Prenatal care can help to ensure a healthy pregnancy for both mother and baby.

What is being tested?

A pregnancy blood test is used to check for hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), a hormone that is present in a woman’s blood after fertilization. An hcG level below 5 mIU/mL is considered negative for pregnancy. An hCG level above 25 mIU/mL is considered positive for pregnancy. Levels between 5-25 mIU/mL are considered inconclusive and will require that you repeat the test at a later time.

When to get tested?

If you believe that you are pregnant or have missed your menstrual period, a pregnancy test can help to confirm whether or not you are pregnant.

Test results will indicate whether you are or are not pregnant.

Why get tested?

Testing to confirm a pregnancy is necessary given the importance of proper prenatal care. Once a pregnancy has been confirmed, an OB-GYN or other type of family doctor can help with the management of your care.

Additionally, an hCG Quantitive blood test can also be used to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, to help diagnose and monitor a pregnancy that might be failing, and to monitor your health after a miscarriage. For more information on the use of a pregnancy test for these health matters, please contact your medical provider.

Blood test for pregnancy vs. urine test for pregnancy

The two most common methods for confirming a pregnancy are with a urine test and with a blood test. Each of these tests works by measuring the presence of the hCG hormone. When done properly, a home-based urine test is generally 97-99% accurate. Blood tests are 99% accurate. The biggest benefit of a blood test is that it can confirm or rule out a pregnancy earlier than a urine test. In fact, because a blood test can find smaller amounts of hCG, it can confirm or rule out a pregnancy before a missed period.

*It is solely your responsibility to promptly discuss all laboratory test results with a physician. Neither Sonora Quest Laboratories nor its Medical Director will provide interpretation, counseling, consulting, or care recommendations on the basis of any laboratory results provided to you.
