Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) affect millions of Americans each year. Diagnosis of STDs can often be challenging since several of the most common STDs may not present any signs or symptoms. That’s why regular STD testing is so important if you’re sexually active or belong to a high-risk group. A timely diagnosis of an STD allows you to seek the proper treatment and helps to protect your sexual partners. Many STDs can be cured, or at least managed, with the right medication.

The CDC calls STD testing one of the most important things you can do for your health and even offers guidelines as to how often you should be tested. If you believe that you’ve been exposed to an STD or simply wish to confirm your status, ordering an STD screening allows you to confirm your diagnosis and to make the necessary decisions to manage your health.

The number of STD cases in the United States is currently at an all-time high. Arizona is also experiencing a sharp increase in STD cases at this time. In fact, the number of STD cases in Arizona have more than tripled since 2000, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services. In Tucson and greater Pima County, the number of reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis all increased from 2016 to 2017.

One particular STD which is of concern in the Tucson area is syphilis. In 2015, there were no reported cases of syphilis in pregnant women. However, there were three reported cases of syphilis in pregnant women in 2017 and in 2018 in pregnant women in Pima County. Syphilis in pregnant women is especially dangerous because it can cause severe health problems and can even result in the death of the baby.

STD Screen

Sexually transmitted diseases are diseases that are commonly spread by sexual contact. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV, and syphilis are some of the most common STDs. Many times, a person may be unaware that he or she has been infected with one of these STDs. Therefore, it's important for individuals that are at-risk to follow established testing guidelines and to get tested as needed.

Herpes testing is recommended in order to confirm whether or not a person is experiencing an outbreak. After being diagnosed, drug treatments can allow for HIV-positive individuals to slow the progression of the virus.
